Invited Speaker 

Lenore Manderson is Professor of Medical Anthropology in the School of Psychology, Psychiatry and Psychological Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, and School of Political and Social Inquiry, Faculty of Arts, at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. Her research focuses on chronic illness, chronicity and disability, in Australia and a number of Southeast Asian settings, but in addition she works on gender and sexuality, infectious disease, and immigration and ethnicity, with populations in Australia and in Asia and Africa. From 2002-2007, she held an inaugural Australia Research Council Federation Fellowship at University of Melbourne and Monash University, and spent much of 2008 at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, as senior Hillel Friedland Fellow and Visiting Professor, working to strengthen higher degree training and to develop a PhD program in public health. She has trained over 100 higher degree students to graduation, has authored and edited 16 books and nearly 500 articles, book chapters, reports and monographs. She is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia and of the World Academy of Art and Science.

William H. Polonsky, PhD, CDE
Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Behavioral Diabetes Institute, Associate Clinical Professor in Psychiatry, University of California, San Diego

Dr. William H. Polonsky received his PhD in clinical psychology from Yale University and has served as Chairman of the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators, Senior Psychologist at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston and Instructor in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He is an active researcher in the field of behavioral diabetes, a licensed clinical psychologist and certified diabetes educator. Dr. Polonsky has served on the editorial boards of numerous lay and professional journals in diabetes, including Diabetes Care, Clinical Diabetes, Diabetes Forecast, Diabetes Self-Management and Diabetes Health.
